"Marcador somático" en clave evolutiva: sobre el aporte de Antonio Damasio a la articulación entre neurociencia y filosofía

Abstract

De entre los múltiples términos acuñados por Antonio Damasio, a partir de la publicación de El error de Descartes (1994), el concepto ‘marcador somático’ es uno de los que más interés suscitó entre los investigadores dedicados a la filosofía. Con el fin de comprender dicha noción en profundidad es necesario considerarla no solamente desde el punto de vista neurofisiológico, sino también en una clave evolutiva, es decir, dentro del marco de la teoría de la evolución biológica. En otras palabras, con el fin de ahondar en la relevancia del ‘marcador somático’ para los enfoques contemporáneos de, por ejemplo, el vínculo emoción/razón o el problema mente-cuerpo, se precisa analizarlo no solamente en relación con las dos estructuras neuroanatómicas centrales implicadas en su funcionamiento, las amígdalas y la corteza prefrontal, sino también a la luz de la filogenia del sistema nervioso en general y del encéfalo en particular. De allí que este concepto, en especial, pueda entenderse como uno de los aportes más importantes del neurocientífico portugués a la articulación contemporánea entre neurociencia, biología evolutiva y filosofía. En este artículo exploraremos dicha articulación.

Among the many terms coined by Antonio Damasio, after the publication of Descartes’ Error (1994), the concept ‘somatic marker’ is one of those that aroused the most interest among researchers dedicated to philosophy. In order to understand this notion in depth, it is necessary to consider it not only from the neurophysiological point of view, but also from an evolutionary perspective, that is, within the framework of the theory of biological evolution. In other words, in order to delve into the relevance of the ‘somatic marker’ for contemporary approaches to, for example, the emotion/reason link or the mind-body problem, it is necessary to analyze it not only in relation to the two neuroanatomical structures involved in its functioning, the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex, but also in light of the phylogeny of the nervous system in general. Hence, this concept, in particular, can be understood as one of the most important contributions of the Portuguese neuroscientist to the contemporary articulation between neuroscience, evolutionary biology and philosophy. In this article we will explore this articulation.
