Dilemas históricos y actuales sobre los vínculos entre lenguaje y ciencia

Abstract

El presente trabajo aborda una serie de consideraciones históricas y actuales sobre la relación entre el lenguaje y la ciencia. Para ello, propone distinguir dos dimensiones inscriptas en los fenómenos del lenguaje. Por un lado, la referida a las lenguas (naturales y artificiales) destinadas a difundir saberes científicos. Por otro, la referida a los rasgos y exigencias del uso del lenguaje (en términos de claridad, precisión, objetividad) en prácticas científicas, es decir, la dimensióndel discurso. Luego de un sucinto recorrido histórico sobre ambas cuestiones, el texto se concentra en revisar las problemáticas actuales que atraviesa la comunicación científica local, en particular en las áreas de las ciencias exactas, naturales y sus distintas aplicaciones. Los ejes que estructuran el trabajo son: las causas y efectos de la supremacía del inglés y del relegamiento delespañol en la difusión de la ciencia, los vínculos entre el compromiso patriótico del científico y el uso de lenguas, los criterios de evaluación del sistema científico y su incidencia en los posicionamientos lingüísticos de investigadores e investigadoras, las “directrices para autores” como instrumento regulatorio de la escritura especializada, y los desafíos y posibilidades de unaciencia plurilingüe.

This paper addresses a series of historical and current considerations on the relationship between language and scientific communication. To do so, it proposes distinguishing two dimensions of language: on the one hand, that referring to languages (natural and artificial) intended to disseminate specialized knowledge, and to the political, economic and cultural processes involved. On the one hand, there is the reference to languages (natural and artificial) intended to disseminate scientific knowledge. On the other hand, there is the reference to the characteristics and requirements of language use (in terms of clarity, precision, objectivity) in scientific practices, that is, the dimension of discourse. After a brief historical overview of both topics, the text focuses on the current issues facing local scientific communication, particularly in the areas of the exact and natural sciences and their various applications. The axes that structure the work are: the causes and effects of the supremacy of English and the relegation of Spanish in the dissemination of science, the links between the patriotic commitment of scientists and the use of languages, the evaluation criteria of the scientific system and its impact on the linguistic positions of researchers, the "guidelines for authors" as a regulatory instrument for specialized writing, and the challenges and possibilities of a multilingual science.
