Literatura y cognitivismo en la estética de John Dewey

Abstract

Aunque la teoría estética de John Dewey ha sido ampliamente comentada en la literatura secundaria durante las últimas cuatro décadas, pocos trabajos han destacado la importancia que el filósofo otorgaba a las artes literarias. La hipótesis de este artículo sostiene que la literatura ocupaba un lugar medular en la teoría estética de Dewey y que desempeñó una función central en su argumento cognitivista estético. Para desarrollar esta hipótesis, la investigación se estructura en cuatro etapas. La primera consiste en una introducción al problema. A continuación, se analiza la presencia de la literatura como elemento central en la teoría estética de Dewey, tanto en su etapa de madurez como en su juventud. En el tercer apartado, se examina el rol de la literatura en su argumento cognitivista estético. Finalmente, en la cuarta y última sección, se presentan algunas conclusiones.

Although John Dewey’s aesthetic theory has been widely discussed in secondary literature over the past four decades, few works have highlighted the importance the philosopher assigned to the literary arts. The hypothesis of this article claims that literature occupied a significant place in Dewey’s aesthetic theory, and that it played a central role in his cognitivist aesthetic-moral argument. To develop this hypothesis, the research is structured in four stages. The first consists of an introduction to the problem. The following section focuses on the presence of literature as a central element in Dewey’s aesthetic theory, both in his maturity and in his youth. The third section examines the role of literature in his aesthetic-cognitivist argument. Finally, in the fourth and last section, some conclusions are presented.
