Entre el heroísmo y la "soberbia imprudente": Ofermōd en La Batalla de Maldon

Abstract

Este estudio se centra en la noción de arrogancia y heroísmo en el poema fragmentario La Batalla de Maldon, que relata un enfrentamiento entre anglosajones y daneses en 991 a orillas del río Blackwater (Pant), Essex. Partimos de la interpretación de J. R. R. Tolkien sobre el término ofermōd usado por el poeta para describir la supuesta soberbia del líder anglosajón al permitir que los vikingos pasen el río. El análisis muestra cómo la arrogancia lleva a la derrota de Byrhtnoth, el jefe, cuyo heroísmo imprudente contrasta con la sabiduría esperada de un líder. La muerte de Byrhtnoth lleva a los guerreros subordinados a destinos heroicos pero humildes. En línea con estudios recientes, analizamos la configuración y resonancia de ofermōd a lo largo del poema a partir de distintos indicios que ofrece el texto en inglés antiguo, considerando a su vez las alternativas para traducir al español el complejo sentido del original.

This study focuses on the notion of arrogance and heroism in the fragmentary poem The Battle of Maldon, which recounts a confrontation between Anglo-Saxons and Danes in 991 on the banks of the River Blackwater (Pant) in Essex. We draw on J.R.R. Tolkien’s interpretation of the term ofermōd used by the poet to describe the supposed arrogance of the Anglo-Saxon leader in allowing the Vikings to pass the river. The analysis shows how arrogance leads to the defeat of Byrhtnoth, the leader, whose reckless heroism contrasts with the wisdom expected of a leader. Byrhtnoth’s death leads subordinate warriors to heroic but humble fates. In line with recent studies, we analyze the configuration and resonance of ofermōd throughout the poem from various clues provided by the Old English text, while considering alternatives for translating the complex meaning of the original into Spanish.
