Estado, situación y propuestas de consolidación misional en el Chaco. El Memorial de Juan Patricio Fernández Sj y la Misión de San Esteban de Miraflores 1725

Abstract

La actividad jesuita en el territorio chaqueño transcurrió entre finales del siglo XVI hasta laexpulsión de la orden en 1767. En este proceso, los jesuitas dejaron en diversos documentos las tareas apostólicas que realizaron con los indios chaquenses. Entre la amalgama de fuentes ignacianas se ubican los memoriales, escritos que guardan una serie de datos sumamente ricos para comprender la dinámica interna de las misiones, colegios y residencias de las orden, avances o dificultades en la evangelización, problemáticas administrativas y situación económica y espiritual de las reducciones. Por esta razón, nos interesó poner en valor el memorial elaborado por el padre jesuita Juan Patricio Fernández en 1725, sobre la misión de San Esteban de Miraflores de indios lules. Este pueblo constituyó el primer ensayo concreto en la evangelización del Chaco en el siglo XVIII, luego de numerosos intentos en el siglo precedente. Fernández nos presenta el estado misional chaquense a través de 14 puntos, en los que articula la situación interna de la misión, en términos materiales y espirituales, con aquellas dimensiones de orden político institucional que eran necesarios para proyectar la evangelización a todas las parcialidades de la región austral del Chaco.

Jesuit activity in the Chaco territory took place between the end of the 16th century and the expulsion of the order in 1767. During this process, the Jesuits left behind several documents detailing the apostolic work they carried out among the Chaco Indians. Among the various Ignatian sources are the memorials, documents which preserve a series of extremely rich data for understanding the internal dynamics of the missions, schools, and residences of the order, the progress and difficulties in evangelization, administrative problems, and the economic and spiritual situation of the reductions. For this reason, we aim to highlight the memorial prepared by Jesuit Father Juan Patricio Fernández in 1725, on the San Esteban de Miraflores mission of the Lule Indians. This mission constituted the first concrete attempt at the evangelization of the Chaco during the 18th century, following numerous attempts in the previous century. Fernández presents the missionary state through 14 points, in which he articulates the internal situation of the mission, in material and spiritual terms, with those political-institutional dimensions that were necessary to project evangelization to all parts of the southern Chaco region.
