Lo celeste, lo cotidiano y la colonización: Las representaciones pilagás del cielo

Abstract

Este artículo aborda las representaciones del cielo y sus elementos entre los grupos pilagás del Gran Chaco argentino, con el propósito de analizar etnográficamente sus cambios y permanencias a lo largo del tiempo. Los cambios en estas concepciones están fuertemente relacionados con las transformaciones que los pilagás han experimentado en su vida diaria, especialmente desde la colonización del Chaco. Las incursiones militares, el avance de los colonos, la Guerra del Chaco, la privatización de los terrenos, el arribo del ferrocarril y la instalación de los enclaves de trabajo y los establecimientos religiosos forzaron a la población indígena a adoptar una vida sedentaria, lo que modificó significativamente su cotidianeidad y sus maneras de obtener el sustento. De esta forma, la percepción del tiempo y del espacio, donde el firmamento tenía una importancia considerable, también fue presentando variaciones. Por lo tanto, comprender las transformaciones en las representaciones celestes, particularmente aquellas vinculadas a las actividades de sustento, será crucial para entender cómo los pilagás actuales conciben el cielo y todo lo que consideran que lo compone.

This article analyzes the representations of the sky and its objects among the Pilagá of the Argentinean Gran Chaco, with the aim of describing ethnographically their changes and continuities over time. The shifts in these conceptions are strongly related to the transformations that the Pilagá people have experienced in their daily lives, especially since the colonization of the Chaco. Military incursions, the advance of settlers, the Chaco War, the privatization of lands, the arrival of the railroad, and the establishment of work enclaves and religious settlements forced the indigenous population to adopt a sedentary lifestyle, which significantly modified their daily lives and their ways of obtaining sustenance. Consequently, the perception of time and space, in which the sky held considerable importance, also underwent variations. Therefore, understanding the transformations in celestial representations, particularly those linked to sustenance activities, will be crucial to comprehend how the current pilagás conceive the sky and everything they believe composes it.
