Félix de Azara y las travesías de la escritura de América

Abstract

En este artículo nos interesa mostrar no solo la construcción discursiva que Félix de Azara plantea en sus escritos, sino también cómo ellos fueron reapropiados estratégicamente por el mundo editorial y comercial europeo con el objetivo de transformar a este ingeniero en un artífice de aventuras y desvelos de un protocientífico aislado en tierras americanas. Por este motivo, contemplamos las dos caras del viaje ilustrado europeo por América: por un lado, las estrategias y recursos que despliega Azara a lo largo de sus escritos en diálogo con un espacio que no se deja aprehender o demarcar del todo; luego, las dificultades y vericuetos que tuvo que sortear este letrado a la hora de publicar sus escritos, es decir, el derrotero comercial que consideramos necesario evidenciar para dar cuenta de un viaje en dos tiempos de la mayoría de los científicos europeos en América.

We are interested in showing in this article not only the discursive construction that Felix de Azara proposes in his writings, but also how they were strategically reappropriated by the European publishing and commercial world with the aim of transforming this engineer into an architect of adventures and worries of a protoscientist isolated in American lands. For this reason, we contemplate the two sides of the European illustrated journey through America: on the one hand, the strategies and resources that Azara deploys throughout his writings in dialogue with a space that does not allow itself to be fully apprehended or demarcated; then, the difficulties and twists and turns that this lawyer had to overcome when publishing his writings, that is, the commercial path that we consider necessary to demonstrate to account for a two-step journey of the majority of European scientists in America.
