Itinerarios materiales: Circulación interregional y paisajes sociales en el valle Calchaquí (Provincia de Salta)

Abstract

Las poblaciones que habitaron el valle Calchaquí central durante la primera mitad del segundo milenio d.C. se insertaron en circuitos de interacción interregional de diverso alcance y singularidad que permitieron la circulación de bienes e información hacia y desde el valle. En ese contexto, en este trabajo se analizan las trayectorias de circulación y consumo de dos conjuntos materiales específicamente, las tabletas y tubos de inhalación de alucinógenos y la cerámica, a fin evaluar la manera en que las mismas se han insertado en entramados materiales y sociales mayores. Los artefactos de inhalación evidenciaron fuertes semejanzas morfológicas e iconográficas con ejemplares de otras regiones del Noroeste argentino y del Norte de Chile, mostrando una capacidad de hacer presentes en la práctica lugares y relaciones distantes. Por su parte, en el conjunto cerámico calchaquí casi no se observaron vasijas y/o estilos foráneos, a pesar de que las poblaciones del valle participaron en circuitos de escala interregional, lo que conformó un ámbito sin referencias a otros universos materiales o sociales. Consideramos que estas diferencias responderían a la complejidad del escenario social tardío atravesado por momentos de conflicto y de integración social, que habría requerido a las poblaciones calchaquíes un constante juego entre la reafirmación de la comunidad local y la integración a un espacio sociopolítico mayor y como parte de colectivos más amplios.

Societies that inhabited the central Calchaquí valley during the first half of the second millennium A.D. participated in circuits of interregional interaction of various scope and singularity that allowed the circulation of goods and information to and from the valley. In this context, this paper analyzes the trajectories of circulation and consumption of two material assemblies, snuff trays and tubes and ceramics, in order to assess the way in which they engaged into greater material and social webs. The snuff artifacts showed strong morphological and iconographic similarities with specimens from other regions of Northwestern Argentina and Northern Chile, showing a capacity to make distant places and relationships present in practice. On the other hand, in the Calchaquí ceramic ensemble, almost no foreign vessels and/or styles were observed, despite the fact that the populations of the valley participated in circuits of an interregional scale, which formed a setting without references to other material or social universes. We consider that these differences responded to the complexity of the late social scenario, crossed by moments of conflict and social integration, which required the Calchaquí populations to constantly play between the reaffirmation of the local community and the integration into a larger sociopolitical space and as part of larger groups.
