La ciudad del cemento: Olavarría, 1960-1980

Abstract

La ciudad de Olavarría, ubicada en el centro de la provincia de Buenos Aires, es reconocida por su principal actividad económica: la industria cementera. La existencia de importantes canteras de piedra caliza favoreció la aparición de industrias que con el paso del tiempo se convirtieron en el motor económico de la ciudad y permitieron el crecimiento de la ciudad hasta convertirse en lo que actualmente se considera la capital del cemento. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo indagar la relación económica que comienzan a construir las empresas con el municipio local, estrechamente ligada a la necesidad de fomentar la actividad minera como la principal actividad de la región, lo que permitió construir y difundir la representación de una ciudad imaginada, como “la ciudad del cemento”.

The city of Olavarría, located in the centre of the province of Buenos Aires, is famous for its cement production activities. The existence of important limestone quarries favoured the appearance of industries which in time became the economic mainstay of the city, enabling it to grow into what it is today, the virtual capital of cement. The objective of this piece of work is to look into the economic relationship that the cement companies established with the local municipality, closely related to the need to encourage mining activity as the main activity in the region, which enabled the construction and exhibition of the representation of an imaginary city, called “the city of cement”.
