Por la "huella del mineral"... Caminos y experiencias del andar en Catamarca (Argentina), segunda mitad del siglo XIX

Abstract

En este trabajo ponemos el foco en los caminos como cuestión. Buscamos caracterizar los caminos de los que se valieron los proyectos mineros del oeste catamarqueño en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, así como analizar las experiencias de “andar” a través de ellos. Proponemos que, en las décadas de auge minero, la infraestructura vial –diseñada y financiada formalmente– era precaria o escasa en el oeste de Catamarca y que el trazado de huellas y caminos informales, así como las antiguas formas de transitarlos y las experiencias locales a ellos asociados fueron las que, en definitiva, sostuvieron a las empresas mineras facilitando la movilización de gente, insumos y minerales. La investigación se basa en una amplia variedad de fuentes históricas publicadas e inéditas y busca aportar nuevos datos sobre la minería decimonónica de Catamarca y las dinámicas de relación que se desarrollaron entre diferentes actores en tal contexto.

In this work, we focus on roads as a subject of study. We aim to characterize the roads used by mining projects in western Catamarca during the second half of the 19th century, as well as to analyse the experiences of traveling through them. We propose that, during the decades of mining boom, the formally designed and financed road infrastructure was precarious or scarce in western Catamarca, and that the tracing of informal paths and roads, as well as the ancient ways of traversing them and the local experiences associated with them, ultimately supported mining enterprises by facilitating the movement of people, supplies, and minerals. The research is based on a wide variety of published and unpublished historical sources and seeks to provide new data on 19th-century mining in Catamarca and the dynamics of relationships developed among different actors in this context.
