Migrantes, trabajo y permisos en las Islas Malvinas: Un análisis mediático desde 2018 hasta los inicios de la pandemia COVID-19

Abstract

Este artículo se propone identificar cómo fue representada, mediáticamente, la problemática laboral, poblacional y migratoria en las Islas Malvinas antes y durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Para ello, se analizan un conjunto de noticias publicadas por la prensa isleña: Penguin News y Mercopress, desde 2018, cuando se comienza a visibilizar la falta de mano de obra en las islas, el envejecimiento de la población y se buscan modificar algunos procedimientos migratorios, y hasta la primera mitad de 2020, con el inicio de la pandemia. Metodológicamente, se privilegia un abordaje cualitativo, con un enfoque sociosemiótico que permite analizar las interrelaciones discursivas y socio-comunicacionales en los discursos mediáticos, identificando los sentidos sociales que recorren a las nociones de trabajo, migraciones y derechos laborales, entre otros.

This article attempts to identify how labour, migration and population problems in the Malvinas Islands were represented by the media before and during COVID-19 pandemic. In this way, we analyse news articles published by the island press: Penguin News, and Mercopress, from 2018, when the lack of employment on the islands and the aging of the population began to become visible, and some migration procedures began to be modified and to the first half of 2020, when the pandemic begins. Methodologically, a qualitative approach is favoured, with a socio-semiotic perspective that allows us to analyse the discursive and socio-communicational interrelations in the media discourses, identifying the social meanings that run through the notions of work, migrations and labour rights, among others.
