Postglacial to Anthropocene chironomid records of the Southern Hemisphere

Abstract

Using subfossil chironomid remains as indicators of past environmental conditions is now a well-established approach. From reconstructing lake trophic status to climate change, chironomids are among some of the best indicators for their ability to provide quantifiable estimates of change. We review the published information about Postglacial and Anthropocene subfossil chironomid records from Australia, New Zealand, and South America and outline the current and future directions of chironomid research in these regions.
