Resumen
Cryopreservation of the paternal and maternal genome is an efficient and safe way to preserve endangered and aquaculture interest species. Fish sperm cryopreservation protocols were developed for several species successfully with practical applications. However, the cryopreservation of fish maternal genetic material is still challenging, as the cryopreservation protocols for oocytes and embryos are still in the developmental phase. Thus, this chapter presented the current state of development of South American neotropical fish embryos and ovarian tissue cryopreservation. In this chapter, a scarcity of studies focuses on preserving the maternal genome of South American species. Therefore, special emphasis should be placed on improving and developing cryopreservation protocols for embryos and ovarian tissue from South American species.
