Un obispo en tiempos de reformas: cementerios y testamentos en la visita diocesana de Benito Lué y Riega (1803-1805)

Abstract

La visita realizada por el obispo Lué y Riega a la diócesis de Buenos Aires entre 1803 y 1805 provee una imagen invaluable del estado económico, político e institucional de la Iglesia rioplatense a comienzos del siglo XIX. En este artículo, centramos nuestra mirada sobre dos aspectos en particular: por un lado, las modificaciones en las prácticas de entierro (especialmente la creación de cementerios extraurbanos), y por el otro, la visita de testamentos y legados píos. A través de estos, procuramos analizar el impacto de las reformas eclesiásticas borbónicas y su implementación en la región a fines del período colonial.

The visitation made by Bishop Lué y Riega to the diocese of Buenos Aires between 1803 and 1805 provides an invaluable image of the economic, political and institutional state of the Rio de la Plata Church at the beginning of the 19th century. In this article, we focus on two particular aspects: on the one hand, the reforms in burial practices (especially the creation of extra-urban cemeteries), and on the other, the visit of testaments and pious legacies. Through these, we analyze the impact of the Bourbon ecclesiastical reforms and their implementation in the region at the end of the colonial period.
