Árboles, memorias y representaciones en las disputas por paisajes e identidades en Valle de Uco, centro-oeste argentino

Abstract

A partir de concebir a la vegetación como compuesta por sentidos, representaciones e historias, en el presente artículo exponemos y problematizamos cómo determinados árboles y arbustos están inmersos en tramas desiguales de construcción de identidades étnicas y paisajes. A través de un estudio que relaciona la labor etnográfica con la búsqueda de fuentes históricas y artículos periodísticos actuales, indagamos en las memorias y las representaciones que se construyen sobre el manzano, el chañar, el chacay y la rosa mosqueta situados en el centro-oeste de la provincia de Mendoza. Postulamos que esta vegetación activa y construye memorias que catalizan la inclusión, jerarquización o resistencias de identidades étnicas y de los paisajes a los que está asociada. Nuestra área de estudio se sitúa junto a la cordillera frontal de Los Andes, en una de las primeras zonas irrigadas del Valle de Uco, la cual, hacia las tres últimas décadas viene experimentando un proceso de extranjerización y concentración de la tierra y el agua y de reactualización del imaginario europeo-civilizatorio promovido por el estado provincial desde fines del siglo XIX.

Starting from conceiving the vegetation as composed of meanings, representations and stories associated with it, in this article we expose and problematize how certain trees and bushes are immersed in unequal meshworks of construction of ethnic identities and landscapes. Through a study that relates ethnographic work with the search for historical sources and current newspaper articles, we investigate the memories and representations that are built on an apple tree, chañar, chacay and sweetbriar rose located in the center-west of the province of Mendoza. We postulate that this vegetation activates and builds memories that catalyze the inclusion, hierarchization or resistance of ethnic identities and the landscapes to which they are associated. Our study area is located next to the front mountain range of the Andes, in one of the first irrigated areas of the Uco Valley, which, for the last three decades, has been experiencing a process of foreignization and concentration of land and water and of updating the European-civilizing imaginary promoted by the provincial state since the end of the 19th century.
