The spatiotemporal distribution of dry and wet events in the southern Pampas Region (Argentina) was evaluated for the 1960-2022 period. Rainfall data series were analyzed using the Standardized Precipitation Index, and a Geographic Information System was employed to examine their spatial distribution. Drought events exhibited higher intensity compared to rainfall events. The average duration of these events was 11 months, with longer durations in the eastern and central areas of the study, peaking at 27.6 months in the south. Both average and maximum intensity were lower in the southwest and increased towards the northeast. Rainfall cycles were more persistent in the north and decreased towards the east and south. The intensity of these periods was higher in the north and decreased towards the south. Regarding periodicity and frequency, drought events displayed greater regularity and occurrence than rainfall events, with an average return period of 3.1 years and a frequency of 20.9 events. The results of this study provide crucial information for a region highly vulnerable to the effects of precipitation variability.
