Resumen

This chapter provides an in-depth review of the behavior of functional polymers under high-strain-rate deformations, focusing on their response to shock and blast waves in both bulk systems and thin film states. Emphasizing the critical role polymers play under extreme conditions, this study underscores their significance in testing the structural integrity and behavioral response of materials subjected to severe pressure. This research is particularly pertinent given the escalating interest in high-strain-rate phenomena, with implications for a broad range of industries, including aerospace, defense, and automotive sectors. Here, we focus on the latest advancements in understanding the shock response of diverse polymeric materials. This includes a detailed examination of thermoplastic polymers, thermoplastic elastomers, and vitrimer, delving into their distinctive properties and behaviors when faced with extreme conditions. A key aspect of our review is the exploration of the shock puncture phenomena in membranes, offering crucial insights into the resilience and reliability of these materials in real-world applications. Methodologically, the chapter blends experimental data with theoretical analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject. It also methodically organizes the presentation of results into specific polymer categories, ensuring thorough coverage of the topic. Ultimately, this chapter aims to present an in-depth revision of the current understanding of the intricate physical processes behind polymer shock absorption, shedding light on aspects of polymer behavior under high-strain-rate conditions that have remained partially unexplored until recent years.
