La magia de las paradojas: Una reflexión sobre el entramado de rewe

Abstract

Este trabajo explora los recientes eventos políticos que han aglutinado, separado y movilizado a diversas comunidades mapuche en Puelmapu (Argentina), específicamente en las regiones de Río Negro, Neuquén y Chubut, en defensa y lucha por un rewe, espacio sagrado de gran significado para el Pueblo mapuche y especialmente para el rol de las/os machi (autoridad política y filosófica que tiene la función de curar dolencias físicas como espirituales). Al respecto, me pregunto por el devenir del rewe como centro simbólico y material de los conflictos entre esas comunidades y distintos actores estatales, judiciales y empresariales. Para abordar este interrogante, recurro a las ideas de Pierre Bourdieu y Yvette Delsault (1975) sobre los usos desiguales de la "magia de la política". Específicamente, me pregunto si, en un contexto donde los discursos dominantes contribuyen a simplificar y banalizar la complejidad del rol de machi, están dadas las condiciones para discutir la relevancia que, para el Pueblo mapuche, tiene la preservación de su rewe. La magia inherente a este espacio sagrado no solo crea el mundo sobre el que trabaja un/a machi, sino también las agencias con potencial político para defenderlo. ¿En qué consiste esa magia política que convierte al rewe en un punto de inflexión en las negociaciones entre el Pueblo mapuche y las instituciones del Estado? Para responder esta pregunta, organicé el trabajo en algunas paradojas que explican por qué hoy el rewe de una machi está en el centro de la escena. El poder del rewe se tensiona entre aquello considerado clandestino y oculto, pero cuya presencia se extiende; y entre existencias emergentes del mundo de lo sagrado, pero cuyos marcos de sentido pertenecen al ámbito del conocimiento profano. Tras esta cuestión, se abre la puerta a un análisis profundo sobre el poder del rewe en la vida espiritual y afectiva de las personas que allí se convocan, pero también en el escenario actual de las disputas políticas por el reconocimiento de las formas mapuche de existir en el mundo.

This paper explores the recent political events that have brought together, divided, and mobilized various Mapuche communities in Puelmapu (Argentina), in the regions of Río Negro, Neuquén, and Chubut, in defense and struggle for a rewe, a sacred space of great significance for the Mapuche People and especially for the role of the machi (political and philosophical authority that has the function of curing physical and spiritual ailments). In this regard, I inquire about the fate of the rewe as a symbolic and material center of conflicts between these communities and various state, judicial, and business actors. To address this question, I build upon the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu and Yvette Delsault (1975) regarding the different uses of the “magic of politics.” Specifically, I wonder if, in a context where dominant discourses contribute to simplify and trivialize the complexity of the machi’s role, the conditions are given to discuss the relevance that the preservation of their rewe has for the Mapuche People. The inherent magic of this sacred space not only creates the world on which a machi works but also the agencies with political potential to defend it. What is this political magic that makes the rewe a turning point in negotiations between the Mapuche People and state institutions? To answer this question, I organized the work into some paradoxes that explain why the rewe of a machi is, today, at the spotlight. The rewe’s power is stretched between what is considered clandestine and hidden but whose presence extends; and between emerging existences from the world of the sacred but whose frameworks of meaning belong to the realm of profane knowledge. Behind this issue, the door opens to a profound analysis of the power of the rewe in the spiritual and affective life of the people who gather there, but also in the current scenario of political disputes for the recognition of Mapuche forms of existence in the world.
