La importancia de la palabra oral en las hagiografías anglosajonas Life of St. Guthlac y Guthlac A

Abstract

En este trabajo se presenta una lectura comparativa del derrotero de Guthlac, santo guerrero anglosajón, en dos versiones de su hagiografía en inglés antiguo, en prosa y en verso. La única versión en prosa en inglés antiguo conocida hasta la fecha, Life of St. Guthlac, se transmite en el manuscrito de Londres, British Library, Cotton Vespasian D. xxi (folios 18r-40v). La versión en verso se halla en un manuscrito datado a finales del siglo X, el Codex Exoniensis, Exeter, Cathedral Library, MS 3501 (folios 32v-52v). Nos centraremos en estos dos textos para analizar en ellos el papel desempeñado por la witedomlice muþe, “boca profética” del santo durante su travesía, y cómo la construcción de sus discursos y de su capacidad performativa hace a la construcción progresiva de la auctoritas del personaje.

This paper presents a comparative reading of the journey of Guthlac, an An- glo-Saxon warrior saint, in two versions of his hagiography in Old English, one in prose and the other in verse. The only known prose version in Old English to date, Life of St. Guthlac, is transmitted in the manuscript London, British Library, Cotton Vespasian D. xxi (folios 18r-40v). The verse version is found in a manuscript dated to the late 10 th century, the Codex Exoniensis, Exeter, Cathedral Library, MS 3501 (folios 32v-52v). We will focus on these two texts to analyze the role played by the witedomlice muþe, “the “prophetic mouth” of the saint during his journey, and how the construction of his discourses and his performative capacity contribute to the progressive construction of the character’s auctoritas.
