Estatus de la Lechucita Canela (Aegolius harrisii) en el noreste argentino: Distribución, vocalizaciones, comportamiento, hábitat y abundancia

Abstract

Es difícil determinar el estatus de la Lechucita Canela (Aegolius harrisii) en Argentina por falta de una síntesis del conocimiento actual. Realizamos trabajo de campo en Misiones, Corrientes y Chaco (Argentina; 2003–2024) y revisamos datos de terceros, aportando 36 localidades nuevas que sugieren una distribución contínua en el nordeste argentino. Es probable que su abundancia y distribución hayan sido subestimadas por características de sus vocalizaciones, similares a otras lechuzas (Megascops sp.) y anfibios (Rhinella sp.), pero podemos usar la frecuencia dominante para separar estas especies en sonogramas. En Misiones, ocurre con frecuencia en ambientes degradados y parece ser rara en Selva Atlántica bien conservada. Es importante buscarla en Corrientes y Entre Ríos para determinar el alcance austral de su distribución en el noreste de Argentina, y en el Chaco Seco para entender si existe una conexión entre las poblaciones de las subespecies iheringi en el noreste y dabbenei del noroeste.

It is difficult to assess the status of the Buff-fronted Owl (Aegolius harrisii) in Argentina because a synthesis of current knowledge is lacking. We conducted field work in Misiones, Corrientes, and Chaco (Argentina; 2003–2024) and we reviewed third-party data, contributing 36 new localities that suggest a continuous distribution in northeastern Argentina. It is likely that the abundance and distribution of the Buff-fronted Owl have been underestimated because of characteristics of its vocalizations, similar to other owls (Megascops sp.) and amphibians (Rhinella sp.), but we can use dominant frequency to separate these species in sonograms. In Misiones, the Buff-fronted Owl occurs frequently in degraded environments but it appears to be rare in well-conserved Atlantic Forest. It is important to search for Buff-fronted Owl in Corrientes and Entre Ríos to determine the southern extent of its distribution in northeastern Argentina, and in the Dry Chaco to understand if there is a connection between populations of the subspecies iheringi in the northeast and dabbenei in the northwest.
