Resumen
Cordiada trichotoma Vell. (Fl. Flumin.: 98. 1829), now recognized as Cordia trichotoma (Vell.) Arráb. ex Steud. (Nomencl. Bot., ed. 2, 1: 419. 1840), is the name applied to a deciduous tree native to the southern regions of South America, reaching heights of up to 30 meters; it is found in south-central Brazil, Paraguay, eastern Argentina, and Bolivia (Miller in J. Bot. Res. Inst. Texas 7: 82. 2013). Revered for its timber quality, plants of this species are prized in forestry practices (Fornes & al. in Pastorino & Marchelli, Low Intensity Breed. Forest Trees Argentina: 427–451. 2021). The wood serves as a substitute for European oak (Quercus robur L.), employed in crafting high-quality furniture (Berni & al., S. Amer. Timbers: 81. 1979; Lorenzi, Arvores Brasileiras, ed. 2, 1: 74. 2000). Additionally, ´ it finds utility in construction for coatings, beams, and frames (Carvalho, Espécies Arbóreas Brasil.: 653. 2002), and modern research has delved into its potential in wood-based materials like plywood panels (Trianoski & Iwakiri in Floresta & Amb. 25: e20170024. 2018). In Argentina, Cordia trichotoma offers a natural source for dyes and textile fibers (Cantero & al., Pl. Interés Econ. Argentina: 673. 2019), while in Brazil it contributes to traditional medicinal practices (Agra & al. in Revista Brasil. Farm. 18: 472– 508. 2008; Cartaxo & Almeida in J. Ethnopharmacol. 131: 326– 342. 2010). Recent advancements, such as efficient in vitro propagation techniques, present promising avenues for enhancing its cultivation (Mantovani & al. in Ci. Florest. 11: 93–101. 2001).
