Los espacios de la lujuria de María de Egipto en el verso y la prosa hispánicos medievales (Mss. Esc. K-III-4 y h-I-13)

Abstract

La vertiente occidental de la historia de Santa María Egipciaca se testimonia en dos versiones hispánicas de la leyenda de la prostituta arrepentida, presentes en los códices escurialenses K-III-4 y h-I-13. El cotejo de estas versiones, respectivamente en verso y prosa, permite analizar las transformaciones estilísticas que experimentan las etapas de la vida de la santa, desde su juventud hasta su vejez, que se despliegan en el tiempo y asumen espacios específicos representativos tanto del pecado como de la penitencia. Si el desierto es el espacio que refiere la etapa penitente de la santa, los espacios de la lujuria como pecado de su juventud dan cuenta de la movilidad con que se caracteriza al pecado en el período, tanto por su cualidad constitutiva basada en el movimiento constante como por su carácter voluble, en oposición a la estabilidad que requerirá su purgación, como se analiza en el presente trabajo.

The western side of the story of Saint Maria Egipciaca is attested in two Hispanic versions of the legend of the repentant prostitute, found in Esc. MSS. K-III-4 and hI-13. The comparison of these versions, respectively in verse and prose, allows us to study the stylistic transformations undergone by the stages of the saint's life, from her youth to her old age, which unfold over time and take on specific spaces representative of both sin and penitence. If the desert is the space that refers the penitent stage, since the more than forty years she spends there are what define the sanctity she will attain, the spaces of lust as the sin of her youth are indicative of the mobility of sin in the period, both for its constitutive quality based on constant movement and for its voluble character, as opposed to the stability that its purgation will require, as will be studied in the present work.
