The aim of this chapter is to present some theoretical considerations on the (paraphrasing Annick Weil-Barais) originality, scope and heuristic value of the concept of precursor model, extensively developed and applied in this book. These considerations will be made with the aid of the epistemological notion of “theoretical model”, using the characterisation of that notion provided by the semanticist philosophy of science of the last quarter of the twentieth century (e.g. Adúriz-Bravo 2013, 2016, 2019; Frigg, 2006; Giere, 1988; Thomson-Jones, 2012).
