Entorno macroeconómico y desempeño industrial: las tres fases de la industria textil argentina, 1920-1935

Abstract

Este artículo se propone estudiar el desempeño de la industria textil durante la década de 1920y la Gran Depresión. Esta rama industrial, cuyo desarrollo era sustancialmente menor a lasindustrias brasileña y mexicana, enfrentó un periodo de cambios y transformaciones enentornos macroeconómicos locales e internacionales inestables. Tomando distancia de lasinterpretaciones que sostienen que el crecimiento industrial tuvo un comportamiento positivoy homogéneo durante toda década de 1920, en este artículo estudiamos el comportamiento dela industria textil en contextos cambiantes marcados por las transformaciones del mercadomundial, el desempeño de la economía argentina, las políticas cambiarias y arancelarias, y lasestrategias empresariales. A partir del relevamiento de fuentes oficiales nacionales yextranjeras, publicaciones del sector y revistas del mundo económico, sostenemos que la ramatransitó tres etapas diferenciadas, en términos de comportamiento sectorial y respuestasempresariales a diferentes problemas. El trabajo muestra en lo que se refiere a la rama textil,que el periodo final de la economía agroexportadora no puede ser interpretado como una etapade prosperidad industrial que anticipó el crecimiento posterior a la Gran Depresión.

This article aims to study the performance of the textile industry during the 1920s and the Great Depression. This industrial branch, whose development was substantially less than the Brazilian and Mexican industries, faced a period of changes and transformations in unstable local and international macroeconomic environments. Taking distance from the interpretations that maintain that industrial growth had a positive and homogeneous evolution throughout the 1920s, in this article we study the performance of the textile industry in changing contexts marked by the transformations of the world market, the performance of the Argentine economy, exchange and tariff policies, and business strategies. Based on a survey of national and foreign official sources, sector publications and economic magazines, we maintain that the branch went through three different stages, in terms of sectoral growth and business responses to different problems. The article shows, with regard to the textile branch, the final period of the agro-export economy cannot be interpreted as a stage of industrial prosperity that anticipated the growth after the Great Depression.
