Delia Cancela y Pablo Mesejeán: Una moda hecha por artistas

Abstract

Este texto aborda distintas obras y experiencias de la pareja de artistas Delia Cancela y Pablo Mesejeán, quienes situaron su trabajo estético en el cruce del arte y la moda. Entre 1966 y 1980, sus creaciones trascendieron las fronteras de las disciplinas a través de una innovadora propuesta que ponía en diálogo las producciones de vanguardia con las de los medios masivos y la industria cultural. Si bien no fueron los únicos artistas que en esos años exploraron el lenguaje de la moda en su práctica creativa, Cancela y Mesejeán se destacaron por una producción sostenida de diseños y prendas que incluyó el desarrollo de su propia marca de ropa en Londres durante los años 70. Desde sus primeras presentaciones en el Instituto Torcuato Di Tella de Buenos Aires la pareja hizo del vestir un medio de expresión personal y distintivo. Aunque sus obras han sido estudiadas desde la historia del arte, pocos enfoques han centrado la atención en sus diseños. Este artículo propone un análisis que, desde la mirada propia de la sociología y la historia del vestir, se centra en los vestuarios y la indumentaria. A partir de estudios preexistentes, materiales de prensa y una entrevista inédita con Delia Cancela, se busca ofrecer una mirada renovada sobre esta emblemática pareja del arte argentino.

This text examines various works and experiences of the artist duo Delia Cancela and Pablo Mesejeán, who positioned their aesthetic practice at the intersection of art and fashion. Between 1966 and 1980, their creations transcended disciplinary boundaries through an innovative approach that bridged avant-garde productions with those of mass media and the cultural industry. While they were not the only artists of the time to explore the language of fashion in their creative practices, Cancela and Mesejeán stood out for their sustained production of designs and garments, which included the development of their own clothing brand in London during the 1970s. From their earliest presentations at the Instituto Di Tella in Buenos Aires, the pair turned clothing into a medium of personal and distinctive expression. Although their work has been studied from the perspective of art history, few approaches have focused on their designs. For this reason, this article proposes an analysis that, from the standpoint of sociology and the history of fashion, centers on their costumes and garments. Drawing on existing studies, press materials, and an unpublished interview with Delia Cancela, it aims to offer a fresh perspective on this iconic Argentine artist duo.
