Las órdenes religiosas y la tarea pastoral en las obras de Juan Bernal Díaz de Luco (1495-1556)

Abstract

Juan Bernal Díaz de Luco (1495-1556) fue una figura de importancia a la hora de considerar los modos de pensar la reforma de la Iglesia y el gobierno de las almas en la España de Carlos V. Sus obras se centraron fuertemente en estos dos tópicos, ocupándose principalmente del papel de obispos y presbíteros, sus formas de comportamiento y su tarea pastoral. Sin embargo, Díaz de Luco también dedicó algunos textos y pasajes al lugar de las órdenes religiosas en el contexto del cuidado de las almas. En este sentido, este artículo tratará dos aspectos. Por una parte, la elaboración de textos para el llamado a los religiosos a abandonar la vida conventual y lanzarse a la conversión de los pueblos americanos. Por otra parte, la tarea que adjudicaba a los religiosos en escritos que estaban destinados fundamentalmente al clero secular. De este modo, se mostrarán las formas en que se pensaba la colaboración y el conflicto entre los distintos sectores del clero en el siglo XVI.

Juan Bernal Díaz de Luco (1495-1556) is an important figure when it comes to considering the ways of thinking about the reform of the Church and the government of souls in the Spain of Charles V. His works focused strongly on these two topics, dealing mainly with the role of bishops and priests, their forms of behavior and their pastoral task. However, Díaz de Luco also dedicated some texts and passages to the place of religious orders in the context of the care of souls. In this sense, this article will address two aspects. On the one hand, the elaboration of texts for the call to the members of the religious orders to abandon conventual life and embark on the conversion of the American peoples. On the other hand, the task that Díaz de Luco assigned to monks and friars in writings that were fundamentally intended for the secular clergy. In such manner, the paper shows some ways in which collaboration and conflict between the different sectors of the clergy in the sixteenth century were thought.
