dc.description.abstract
This chapter addresses the differences and similarities of economic and political elite captures, alternative experiences and social participation in broadcasting and Internet policy-making processes in the twenty-first century in Argentina, as well as its effects on content and structural diversity. This analysis of different forms of media capture and resistances in Argentina is timely because social mobilisation has had an impact on media regulation in recent decades, and the new legislation based on “human rights” approach was a model for other reforms in the region. Nevertheless, elite forms of capture have consolidated and deepened with long-term consequences. Furthermore, the Argentine case is also central to illustrating how discussions about Internet and media regulation are addressed in Latin America and for highlighting the competing demands and power relations among stakeholders. The chapter addresses the following closely connected questions: what are the differences and similarities of capture and resistance processes in Argentina? How are they explained, and what are their effects on content and structural diversity of media and Internet platforms?
