El carácter refutatorio de la dialéctica en República

Abstract

El presente estudio examina la dialéctica en la República de Platón para exhibir que esta sigue teniendo fuertes puntos de contacto con aquella practicada en el período temprano, en particular a partir de la relevancia que conserva el élenchos como vía necesaria de acceso a la verdad. El carácter central que asume la refutación en República, se intentará demostrar, no sólo se sigue de los pasajes en que la dialéctica es caracterizada teóricamente, sino también del ejercicio que de ella se exhibe a lo largo del texto. En efecto, según propongo, el diálogo todo avanza a partir de sucesivos intentos de puesta a prueba y refutación de las posiciones defendidas por Sócrates, las cuales deben exhibir su temple y sostenerse indemnes frente a los embates a los cuales, con ánimo filosófico, son sometidas por sus interlocutores.

The present study examines dialectic in Plato's Republic in order to show that it continues to have strong points of contact with that practiced in the earlier period, particularly in the relevance that elenchos retains as a necessary means of access to truth. The centrality of refutation in the Republic, it will be shown, is evident not only from the passages in which dialectic is theoretically characterized, but also from the exercise of dialectic that is evident throughout the text. In fact, as I propose, the whole dialogue proceeds on the basis of successive attempts to test and refute the positions defended by Socrates, who has to show his mettle and come through unscathed in the face of the attacks to which he is subjected by his interlocutors in a philosophical spirit.
