Onomatopoeia in Qom

Abstract

The chapter specifies phonological, morphological, word-formation, semantic, and syntactic properties of onomatopoeia in Qom (Guaycuruan). Based on the onomatopoeias found in the dictionary (Buckwalter 2001) and on the application of questionnaires to four adult Qom speakers (of the variety spoken in the north-central part of the province of Chaco, Argentina), the sample consists of 80 onomatopoeic words, which met the definition of primary onomatopoeias, that is, direct sound imitations (Kortvelyessy 2020).
