La significación cultural de la Biblioteca Pública General San Martín: sus comienzos históricos y su relación con las sociedades ilustradas de principios del siglo XIX

Abstract

En el presente escrito se repasan los orígenes históricos de la Biblioteca Pública General San Martín, creada a comienzos del siglo XIX en la ciudad de Mendoza, Argentina. En particular, se atiende a su relación con la conformación de sociedades ilustradas que actúan durante la gestación y consecución de los procesos de independencia en el ámbito hispanoamericano. Este tipo de asociaciones tendieron a la regeneración política, económica y cultural de las sociedades tradicionales que provenían del régimen colonial, mediante la difusión de los conocimientos, la extensión de la educación y el acceso público a saberes renovadores. En este sentido, se examinan distintas interpretaciones historiográficas sobre la incidencia de las ideas de la ilustración en los movimientos revolucionarios hispanoamericanos.

This paper reviews the historical origins of the “San Martín General” Public Library, created at the beginning of the 19th century in the city of Mendoza, Argentina. In particular, attention is paid to its relationship with the formation of enlightened societies that act during the gestation and achievement of the independence processes in the Hispanic American sphere. This type of associations tended to the political, economic and cultural regeneration of the traditional societies that came from the colonial regime, through the diffusion of knowledge, the extension of education and public access to innovative knowledge. In this sense, different historiographical interpretations of the incidence of the ideas of the Enlightenment in the Spanish-American revolutionary movements are examined.
