La Compañía de Jesús en Buenos Aires: La acción misional en la ciudad en la primera mitad del siglo XVIII

Abstract

En este trabajo abordamos las características de la acción misional de la Compañía de Jesús en la ciudad de Buenos Aires durante la primera mitad del siglo XVIII. En la primera parte, realizamos algunas consideraciones sobre las características de la labor ignaciana y su desarrollo en los espacios urbanos de la monarquía. A continuación, elaboramos un acercamiento a la trama relacional que construyeron en la ciudad de Buenos Aires por medio de su acción misional y espiritual. En la segunda parte, abordamos tres aspectos. En primer lugar, presentamos un análisis de la acción territorial, las prácticas de evangelización y el desarrollo de los ejercicios espirituales en la ciudad y en la provincia jesuita del Paraguay. En segundo lugar, profundizamos en la relación entre los ejercicios espirituales y los vínculos de los jesuitas con actores relevantes de la sociedad porteña, y cómo esto propició nuevas fundaciones, en particular, la del segundo colegio de la ciudad. Finalmente, abordamos el proceso de autorización de la nueva fundación en el consejo de Indias, sus avatares, y los vínculos cortesanos que posibilitaron el establecimiento definitivo del colegio de Belén.

In this paper we address the characteristics of the missionary action of the Society of Jesus in the city of Buenos Aires during the first half of the 18th century. In the first part, we make some considerations about the characteristics of the Ignatian work and its development in the urban spaces of the monarchy. Then, we elaborate an approach to the relational frame that they built in the city of Buenos Aires through their missionary and spiritual action. In the second part, we address three aspects. First, we present an analysis of the territorial action, the evangelisation practices, and the development of the spiritual exercises in the city and in the Jesuit province of Paraguay. Secondly, we examine the relationship between the Spiritual Exercises and the links between the Jesuits and relevant actors in Buenos Aires society, and how this led to new foundations, in particular the founding of the second college in the city. Finally, we address the process of authorisation of the new foundation in the consejo de Indias, its vicissitudes, and the courtly links that made possible the definitive establishment of the Colegio de Belén.
