Relaciones Aves–Habitat en el sector suburbano de Mar del Plata, Argentina

Abstract

Bird-habitat relationships in the suburban areas of Mar del Plata City, Argentina. – The suburban sector is a portion of the urban-rural gradient where bird richness increases significantly. However, very few studies have analyzed the environmental factors that determine the presence of species in this sector. The aim of this paper is to identify the environmental factors that determine bird richness, abundance, density of guilds, and species density in the suburban sector of Mar del Plata, Argentina. Birds were surveyed by transect counts during the reproductive period in three residential areas that differed in their house cover, tree cover and street design. Bird richness and bird abundance were positively correlated with the percentage of shrub cover, amount and percentage of tree cover, percentage cover of lawn and habitat diversity. On the other hand, they were negatively correlated with percentage of buildings and asphalt cover. The most of guilds and species analyzed correlated positively with the percentage of shrub cover, amount and percentage of tree cover, percentage cover of lawn, habitat diversity and negatively correlated with the percentage of buildings and asphalt cover. Omnivorous were positively correlated with the percentage of lawn cover and negatively correlated with the asphalt cover. The structural complexity of residential areas, determined by different proportions of buildings, lawns, shrubs and trees, probably favors the presence of an elevated number of species compared to more urbanized sites within the suburban sector, where buildings are the dominant component of the landscape.

El sector suburbano es una porción del gradiente urbano-rural donde la riqueza de aves aumenta significativamente. Sin embargo, se sabe poco sobre los factores ambientales que determinan la presencia de especies en ese sector. El objetivo de este trabajo es identificar los factores ambientales que determinan la riqueza de aves, abundancia, densidad de gremios y densidad de especies en el sector suburbano. Se relevaron transectas en tres barrios que difieren en la densidad de casas, arbolado y diseño de las calles, y se contaron aves durante el periodo reproductivo. La riqueza de especies y la abundancia relativa de aves se correlacionaron positivamente con la proporción de arbustos, cantidad y proporción de árboles, proporción de césped y diversidad del hábitat. Por otro lado estuvieron negativamente asociadas con la proporción de edificios y asfalto. La mayoría de los gremios y especies analizadas se correlacionaron positivamente con la proporción de arbustos, cantidad y proporción de árboles, proporción de césped, diversidad del hábitat y negativamente con la proporción de edificios y asfalto. Los omnívoros se correlacionaron positivamente con la proporción de césped y negativamente con la proporción de asfalto. La diversidad estructural de las áreas residenciales, determinada por similares coberturas de edificios, césped, arbustos y árboles, posibilitaría la presencia de un elevado número de especies en relación a sitios más urbanizados, donde los edificios constituyen la estructura dominante del paisaje.
