Description of Labiduris argentinensis sp. nov. (Nematoda: Cosmocercoidea: Atractidae) a new species of nematode in Chelonoidis chilensis Gray, 1870 (Testudines: Testudinidae) for Argentina

Abstract

Describimos una nueva especie de Labiduris (Thapar, 1925) (Cosmocercoidea: Atractidae) colectada del intestino largo de la tortuga terrestre Chelonoidis chilensis Gray 1870 en Argentina. Labiduris argentinensis sp. nov. se diferencia de Labiduris gulosa (Rudolphi, 1819) (única especie válida del género), por el tipo y distribución geográfica del hospedador, posición del poro excretor, tamaño del cuerpo y cola de los nemátodos machos y hembras. La nueva especie posee un poro excretor a nivel de ensanchamiento medio del esófago, un tamaño del cuerpo más pequeño, cola corta y truncada, además de encontrarse en una tortuga terrestre con distribución restringida de Argentina. Estas características de la nueva especie son diferentes a las de L. gulosa que posee un poro excretor frente al bulbo y una cola larga y puntiaguda de gran tamaño y un cuerpo más grande. La nueva especie L. argentinensis sp. nov. representa la segunda especie válida para el género Labiduris.

We describe a new species of Labiduris (Th apar, 1925) (Cosmocercoidea: Atractidae) collected from the long intestine of the land turtle Chelonoidis chilensis Gray 1870 in Argentina. Labiduris argentinensis sp. nov. diff ers from Labiduris gulosa (Rudolphi, 1819) (the only valid species of the genus), by the type and geographic distribution of the host, position of the excretory pore, body size, and tail of the male and female nematodes. Th e new species has an excretory pore at the level of the middle widening of the esophagus, smaller body size, short and truncated tail, and is found in aterrestrial turtle with restricted distribution in Argentina. Th ese characteristics of the new species are diff erent from those of L. gulosa, which has an excretory pore in front of the bulb a long, pointed tail, and a larger body. Th e new species L. argentinensis sp. nov. represents the second valid species for the genus Labiduris.
