El don de lenguas: Usos excepcionales e ideologías de la lengua en la evangelización del Tucumán

Abstract

En este trabajo indagamos sobre algunas manifestaciones coloniales del don de lenguas, misteriosas fábulas (De Certeau 1993) en relación a las lenguas, los hablantes y los oyentes. Si bien los casos que hemos relevado no son muchos, dan cuenta de creencias, representaciones y acciones con y sobre la lengua que merecen ser consideradas pues manifiestan ideologías lingüísticas que, desde otra perspectiva, proporcionan explicaciones sobre hegemonías y estrategias coloniales de sumisión. Estamos interesados por cuestiones discursivas del dominio religioso, no desde una perspectiva representacional, que evalúe el acomodamiento del discurso a alguna realidad, sino pragmática, y por ello no nos preguntamos sobre el valor de verdad de estos discursos sino sobre sus funciones y efectos en el campo de las prácticas no discursivas -en particular, misionales y políticas- reconociendo anudamientos entre éstas y las ideologías sobre las lenguas nativas. Identificamos diferentes acepciones de la expresión “don de lenguas”, establecemos sus rasgos coincidentes, e interpretamos estas ocurrencias en el campo de ideologías sobre las lenguas regionales, no gramatizadas. El don de lenguas, sea como facilidad para aprender muchos idiomas rápidamente y con excelencia, sea como la capacidad de hablar una lengua que todos pueden interpretar, cualquiera sea la lengua que hablen los oyentes ha permitido ingresar a ideologías y prácticas de evangelización. Las consideraciones atañen al virreinato del Perú, y más focalizadamente, a la Gobernación del Tucumán de fines del siglo XVI y primeras décadas del siglo XVII, aunque posiblemente puedan ser extendidas a otras regiones y tiempos de la América colonial.

In this paper we inquire about some colonial manifestations of the gift of languages, mysterious fables in relation to languages, speakers and listeners. Although the cases are few, they show beliefs, representations and actions with and on the language that deserve to be considered since they manifest linguistic ideologies that, from another perspective, provide explanations about hegemonies and colonial strategies of submission. We are inter- ested in discursive questions of the religious domain, not from a representational perspective, which evaluates the accommodation of the discourse to some reality, but from a pragmatic one. For this reason, we do not consider the truth value of these discourses but, rather, their functions and effects in the field of non-discursive practices. We explore, in particular, missionary and political discursive practices, recognizing ties between these and the ideologies of native languages. We identify different meanings of the expression ‘gift of languages’, and establish its coincident features. We interpret these occurrences in the field of ideologies about regional languages. The gift of languages, either as the ability to learn many languages quickly and competently, or as the ability to speak a language that everyone can understand, whatever language the listeners speak, has allowed entry into ideologies and practices of evangelization. The considerations pertain to the Viceroyalty of Peru, and more specifically, to the Government of Tucumán at the end of the 16th century and the first decades of the 17th century, although they could possibly be extended to other regions and times of colonial America.
