Los colonos: Una mirada al western chileno desde el sur

Abstract

A través de estéticas y poéticas que metaforizan el western norteamericano, Los Colonos (Felipe Gálvez Haberle, 2023) aborda la colonización de Tierra del Fuego y el genocidio del pueblo selk’nam. Se trata de un largometraje visualmente impactante que expone la violencia padecida por los indígenas hacia fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Sin embargo, presenta una serie de dilemas en lo que respecta a la narrativa construida a través del montaje de la imagen y el relato. A partir del análisis de un debate desarrollado en el marco de la Cátedra Libre de Pueblos Originarios de la Universidad Nacional de Tierra del Fuego, reflexionaremos sobre la forma y el contenido de la película. Analizaremos las imágenes de alteridad retratada, e indagaremos en sus límites y aciertos para dar cuenta de la violencia y los procesos de larga duración del colonialismo de pioneros (settler colonialism). Argumentamos que si bien Los Colonos puede considerarse como una crítica a la colonización, reproduce los discursos de la extinción de los selk’nam, subalterniza sus trayectorias y borra sus resistencias pasadas y presentes. Al mismo tiempo, diluye las responsabilidades de una amalgama que entrelaza Estados, Iglesias, científicos y terratenientes.

Through poetics and aesthetics that metaphorize the North American western, Los Colonos (Felipe Gálvez Haberle, 2023) engages with the colonization of Tierra del Fuego and the genocide of the Selk’nam people. This visually impacting film exposes the violence undergone by Indigenous peoples at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. However, it presents a series of dilemmas regarding the story that the montage of image and narration constructs. Departing from the analysis of a debate organized by the Cátedra Libre de Pueblos Originarios de la Universidad Nacional de Tierra del Fuego, we reflect on the form and content of the film. We analyze the images of alterity to question their limits and their success to describe the violence and the structures of settler colonialism (colonialismo de pioneros). We argue that even though Los Colonos can be considered a critique of colonization, it reproduces discourses about the extinction of the Selk’nam People, subalternizes their trajectories, and erases their past and present resistance. At the same time the film attenuates the responsibilities of the State, religious institutions, scientists, and landowners.
