Cambios en la cobertura vegetal asociados al pastoreo y sequía en el Monte Oriental rionegrino

Abstract

El sobrepastoreo y la sequía provocan pérdida de la vegetación herbácea en los ecosistemas áridos y semiáridos, aunque el efecto podría variar en función de la distribución espacial de la vegetación. El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar cambios en la cobertura vegetal en un gradiente de pastoreo bajo diferentes condiciones de humedad en el Monte Oriental Rionegrino. En el área de estudio la vegetación se distribuye en parches con alta (“islas arbustivas”) y baja (“interislas”) cobertura vegetal. En otoño de 2011 (período seco) y 2012 (período húmedo) se midió la cobertura basal (especies herbáceas) o de proyección de la canopia (especies arbustivas) mediante transectas de 20 m (n=5) en dos sitios y a tres intensidades de pastoreo: alta (PA), media (PM) y clausura (CL). Los datos se analizaron con ANOVA doble en bloques. No hubo interacción entre pastoreo y humedad. En las interislas la cobertura de vegetación total y de gramíneas perennes fue mayor en CL que en PA, y aumentó 66% y 55% en 2012 en comparación a 2011, respectivamente. En las islas arbustivas la cobertura de vegetación total y de gramíneas perennes no varió con el pastoreo, y aumentó 54% y 90% en 2012 en comparación a 2011, respectivamente. Los arbustos presentaron mayor cobertura en PA, sin variar entre 2011 y 2012. Los resultados sugieren que en las islas arbustivas la vegetación está menos expuesta al sobrepastoreo y que los ciclos húmedos contribuyen a la recuperación de la vegetación tanto en las interislas como en las islas arbustivas.

The overgrazing and drought cause loss of herbaceous vegetation in arid and semiarid ecosystems, although the effect may vary according to the spatial distribution of the vegetation. The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in vegetation cover in a gradient of grazing under different moisture conditions in the Monte Oriental Rionegrino. In the site of study, the vegetation is distributed in patches with high ("islands") and low ("inter-island") cover. In the fall of 2011 (dry period) and 2012 (wet period) the basal cover (herbaceous) or projections of the canopy (shrubs) were measured using linear transections of 20 m (n = 5) at two sites with three grazing intensities: high (HG), moderate (MG) and ungrazed (UG). Data were analyzed using a two way randomized block ANOVA design. There was no interaction between grazing and moisture. In the inter-island the cover of total vegetation and perennial grasses was higher in UG than in HG and increased 66% and 55% in 2012 compared to 2011, respectively. In the islands the cover of total vegetation and perennial grasses did not differ with grazing intensities, and increased 54% and 90% in 2012 compared to 2011, respectively. The cover of shrubs was higher in HG, without differentiating between 2011 and 2012. Our data suggest that the vegetation is less susceptible to overgrazing in the islands shrub and that the wet cycles contributes to the recovery of vegetation in both inter-island and islands shrub.
