El desarrollo de la ganadería y la agricultura en la Entre Ríos de fines del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX

Abstract

En este artículo nos proponemos identificar las características del desarrollo ganadero yagrícola en las últimas décadas del siglo XIX y las tres primeras décadas del XX en la provinciade Entre Ríos buscando visualizar los factores estructurales condicionantes de dicho desarrollo.Las tres preguntas que guían el trabajo son: ¿Cuál fue la principal fuente de riqueza de laprovincia durante el periodo? ¿La subsistencia de los saladeros fue un factor que limitó eldesarrollo de la ganadería? ¿Qué características tuvo el desarrollo agrícola en la provincia? Eltrabajo se divide en tres partes. El primer apartado gira en torno a analizar si la ganadería fuela principal fuente de riqueza de la provincia hasta la crisis del 30. El segundo apartado tratasobre si la demanda sostenida de ganado criollo por parte de los saladeros permitió a laprovincia mantener sus estructuras productivas tradicionales centradas en la ganaderíaextensiva, sin necesidad de invertir e innovar. La tercera parte indaga sobre si las colonias fueronel motor que posibilitó la expansión agrícola en la provincia desde 1880 hasta la década de 1920.

In this article we aim to identify the characteristics of livestock and agricultural development in the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first three decades of the twentieth century in the province of Entre Ríos, seeking to visualise the structural factors that conditioned this development. The three questions that guide the work are: What was the main source of wealth in the province during the period? Was the subsistence of the saladeros a factor that limited the development of livestock? What were the characteristics of agricultural development in the province? The paper is divided into three parts. The first section focuses on whether livestock farming was the main source of wealth in the province until the crisis of the 1930s. The second section deals with whether the sustained demand for Criollo cattle by the saladeros allowed the province to maintain its traditional production structures centred on extensive livestock farming, without the need for investment and innovation. The third part explores whether the colonies were the driving force behind agricultural expansion in the province from 1880 to the 1920s.
