Crania Patagonica: una aproximación material a los estudios antropológicos en Argentina

Abstract

Dès le début de la recherche en anthropologie physique, le crâne fut une référence empirique fondamentale. C’est pourquoi un grand nombre de collections crâniennes, issues de différentes sociétés humaines, ont été constituées. Les études craniologiques se poursuivent encore à l’heure actuelle, avec des théories et des méthodologies renouvelées. L’objectif de cet article est de comprendre les conditions de possibilité de la recherche anthropologique sur ce sujet en Argentine. L’étude morphologique de Marcelo Bórmida sur les crânes indigènes de Patagonie est restituée sous ses différents aspects (matériels, intellectuels et géopolitiques). Certains changements théoriques, technologiques et politiques, survenus au cours des dernières décennies, sont soulignés. C’est enfin la question de la restitution des restes humains aux peuples indigènes originaires qui est abordée.Este trabajo se trata del trabajo publicado en 2022 en Runa, que fue seleccionado para ser republicado en Bérose.

Since the first anthropological studies, the skull has been a fundamental empirical reference. Due to this, a large amount of cranial collections derived from different human societies were created. Even with renewed theories and methodologies, craniological studies continue in present times. The goal of this paper is to understand the conditions of possibility of anthropological research regarding this subject in Argentina. Firstly, I analyze Marcelo Bórmida’s morphological study on indigenous skulls of Patagonia through the different material, intellectual and geopolitical aspects of the sample he investigated. Secondly, I outline some theoretical, technological and political changes that have occurred in recent decades, among which I focus on the restitution of human remains to indigenous peoples.
