Biodiversidade Marinha da Bacia Potiguar: Foraminifera

Abstract

Este volume, que faz parte da série “Biodiversidade Marinha da Bacia Potiguar”, é produto dos projetos de Caracterização e Monitoramento Ambiental Marinho da Bacia Potiguar, coordenados pela Petrobras e executados pela Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), entre outras instituições. Um total de 1.100 espécies de foraminíferos foram registrados no norte do Rio Grande do Norte, em uma ou mais das seguintes regiões da margem continental do nordeste brasileiro: plataforma continental interna, média-externa ou talude continental. No atlas apresentamos 132 espécies de foraminíferos bentônicos vivos registradas nestas regiões. As espécies foram coletadas em diferentes amostragens: (i) 2ª Campanha de Caracterização Ambiental da Bacia Potiguar, realizada em 2003; (ii) quatro Campanhas Regionais de Monitoramento Ambiental na Bacia Potiguar, realizadas em 2009, 2010 e duas em 2014; (iii) dez campanhas de Monitoramento do Emissário Submarino da Estação de Tratamento de Efluentes do Polo Industrial de Guamaré, realizadas entre 2008 e 2015 e (iv) duas campanhas de Caracterização do Talude Continental da Bacia Potiguar, realizadas entre 2009 e 2011. Imagens de microscopia eletrônica de varredura e óptica mostram diferentes aspectos da carapaça; quando disponível, adicionamos imagens do holótipo ou outro tipo. Além disso, incluímos observações gerais sobre a ocorrência regional das espécies, distribuição batimétrica e dados dos sedimentos onde ocorrem. Para complementar, temos um mapa com a distribuição das espécies na área de estudo e o eu registro em distintas regiões do mundo. Por fim, ao final do atlas, há um glossário ilustrado destinado a não-especialistas, que pode auxiliar na compreensão da terminologia técnica. Esta publicação visa despertar o interesse pelos foraminíferos, tornando seu estudo mais acessível e atrativo.

This volume, part of the series “Marine Biodiversity of the Potiguar Basin,” is a product of the Marine Environmental Characterization and Monitoring projects of the Potiguar Basin, coordinated by Petrobras and carried out by the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), among other institutions. A total of 1,100 species of foraminifera have been recorded in northern Rio Grande do Norte, in one or more of the following regions from the continental margin of northeastern Brazil: inner continental shelf, mid-outer continental shelf, or continental slope. In the atlas, we present 132 species of living benthic foraminifera recorded in these regions. The species were collected in different samplings: (i) 2nd Potiguar Basin Environmental Characterization Campaign, carried out in 2003; (ii) four Regional Environmental Monitoring Campaigns in the Potiguar Basin, carried out in 2009, 2010, and two in 2014; (iii) ten campaigns for Monitoring the Submarine Outfall of the Effluent Treatment Station of the Industrial Pole of Guamaré, carried out between 2008 and 2015 and (iv) two campaigns for Characterization of the Continental Slope of the Potiguar Basin, carried out between 2009 and 2011. Scanning electron and optical microscopy images show different aspects of the tests; when available, we add images of the holotype or another type. In addition, we include general observations on the regional occurrence of the species, bathymetric distribution, and data on the sediments where they occur. To complement, we have a map with the distribution of species in the study area and its register in different world regions. Finally, at the end of the atlas, an illustrated glossary intended for non-specialists can help understand the technical terminology. This publication aims to awaken interest in foraminifera, making their study more accessible and attractive.
