Of Patriots and Globalists: the right's influence on Argentina-United States relations

Abstract

In this chapter, we aim to analyzse the different manifestations of the right-wing thought in Argentina's foreign policy and how they have influenced the country's relationship with the United States (US). And we do so, first, by tracing the antecedents of these manifestations and analyzsing their evolution over time; and, second, by providing a comprehensive understanding of Argentina?s foreign policy and its relationship with the US from a right-wing perspective during the democratic period. The chapter argues that there are multiple right-wing foreign policies in Argentina, rather than a singular one, and that understanding the impact of right-wing ideology on the country's relationship with the US requires identifying distinct right-wing traditions. The chapterpaper discusses two qualified right-wing groups in Argentina, a liberal-conservative group that aimed to align with the US and viewed it as a model for political and economic governance, and a nationalist/Hispanic group that saw US hegemony as a root cause of Argentina?s economic and political problems. By analyzsing the historical antecedents and evolution of these different right-wing manifestations, the chapterpaper provides a comprehensive understanding of Argentina's foreign policy and its relationship with the US from a right-wing perspective.
