La ciencia natural en Leibniz: sus fines, su método y la metafísica

Abstract

Entre fines del invierno de 1678 y comienzos del verano de 1679 Leibniz proyectó la redacción de un libro sobre física, para lo cual esbozó apuntes y, como es frecuente en él, esquemas sintéticos de su contenido. El texto finalmente no fue escrito, aunque sí una introducción general a dicha obra. Con ese propósito, Leibniz nos procura una magnífica síntesis acerca de la visión que hacia esa época sostenía acerca de los fines, los métodos y los fundamentos de la ciencia natural en general y de la física en particular. De esta manera, Leibniz cubre un amplio espectro de problemáticas que van desde los fines y la utilidad de la investigación científica, pasando por una clasificación de los métodos que se aplican en ella, hasta llegar, finalmente, a la fundamentación metafísica de la ciencia. Trataremos de mostrar el firme entretejido de referencias que sostiene este programa leibniziano y la clara anticipación de posiciones que nuestro autor desarrollará en textos posteriores, como por ejemplo la introducción de las formas sustanciales y la conciliación del mecanicismo con la teleología.

Between the late winter of 1678 and the early summer of 1679, Leibniz planned to write a book on physics, for which he drafted notes and, as was often the case with him, synthetic outlines of its content. The text was ultimately not written, although a general introduction to this work was. With this purpose, Leibniz provides us with an unvaluable synthesis of the views he held at that time on the aims, methods, and foundations of natural science in general and physics in particular. In this way, Leibniz covers a broad spectrum of issues ranging from the aims and utility of scientific research, through a classification of the methods applied in it, to ultimately reaching the metaphysical foundation of science. We will try to show the strong interweaving of references that supports this Leibnizian program and the clear anticipation of positions that our author will develop in later texts, such as the introduction of substantial forms and the reconciliation of mechanism with teleology.
