Entre la memoria completa y el olvido selectivo impuesto en The Buried Giant de Kazuo Ishiguro

Abstract

Uno de los principales reservorios literarios cuyo origen es exclusivo del imaginario medieval proviene de la materia de Bretaña, específicamente del universo artúrico. El amplio abanico de su productividad ofrece usos muy variados y ha oscilado entre el predominio de la recuperación del Arturo histórico o el ficcional. La novela The Buried Giant (2015) de Kazuo Ishiguro parte de la concepción histórica para la construcción de su marco posartúrico. Durante el siglo vi, un hechizo en forma de niebla, sostenido por la vida de una dragona, hace que el pueblo pierda sus recuerdos y su memoria resulte borrosa. El efecto había sido ideado para dar comienzo a una nueva sociedad sin la enemistad o el resentimiento entre britanos y sajones. A partir del enfoque del neomedievalismo, se analizará el trabajo en el texto con el olvido y la memoria en términos colectivos e individuales.

One of the main literary reservoirs whose origin is exclusive to the medieval imagery comes from the matter of Brittany, specifically from the Arthurian universe. The wide range of its productivity offers varied uses and has oscillated between the predominance of the recovery of the historical Arthur or the fictional one. Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel The Buried Giant (2015) uses as its starting point a historical conception for the construction of its post-Arthurian framework. During the sixth century, a spell in the form of fog, sustained by the life of a dragoness, causes the people to lose their memories and their memory to become blurred. The effect had been devised to usher in a new society without the enmity or resentment between Britons and Saxons. From the neomedievalist approach, the text’s work with forgetting and memory will be analysed in collective and individual terms.
