dc.description.abstract
Protein glycosylation drives cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix information within inflammatory, immunological, and signalling processes, thereby becoming appealing to identify disease biomarkers and treatments. Several findings have contributed to unveil the function of blood cells glycosylation behind the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction(MI). Here, we provide a view on the interplay between blood cells, particularly erythrocytes, and the endothelium to reveal a glyco-centric viewpoint into atherosclerosis and MI remodelling or regeneration.Importantly, we focus on an up-to-date evaluation of preclinical studies and clinical trials based on glycan-targeted drugs to demonstrate their therapeutic potential. In conclusion, by highlighting the critical role that glycobiology plays in atherosclerosis and MI, we would like to inspire new trends in preventive medicine and more targeted therapies.
