El Hospital del Señor del Milagro,Salta (Argentina), 1848-1864

Abstract

El objetivo del presente artículo es abordar la historia de los primeros años de funcionamiento del Hospital del Señor del Milagro de la ciudad de Salta (1848-1864) a fin de analizar las características que por entonces revistió esta institución, los agentes que en ella intervinieron y sus prácticas y representaciones relacionadas al cuidado de los enfermos. El estudio de estas variables nos permitirá aproximarnos a algunas de las particularidades del proceso de secularización en el espacio salteño y a las relaciones que se entablaron entre el poder civil y el eclesiástico en la configuración de una institución de ayuda social a mediados del siglo XIX. Sostenemos que los principios y los agentes religiosos desempeñaron un papel clave en la conformación del Estado provincial salteño y de que supieron articularse con los incipientes proyectos de modernización que se ciñeron sobre algunas instituciones decimonónicas.

The aim of this article is to approach the history of the first years of existence and operation of the Hospital del Señor del Milagro in the city of Salta (1848-1864) in order to analyze the characteristics of this institution at that time, the agents involved in it and their practices and representations related to the care of the sick. The study of these variables will allow us to approach some of the particularities of the secularization process in Salta and the relationships between civil and ecclesiastical power in the configuration of a social assistance institution in the mid-nineteenth century. We argue that religious principles and agents continued to play a key role in the shaping of the provincial state of Salta and that they were able to articulate with the modernization projects that were imposed on some nineteenth-century institutions.
