La formación identitaria del colectivo travesti/trans en Argentina

Abstract

En este artículo emprendemos un recorrido genealógico para comprender la formación identitaria del colectivo travesti/trans durante la década del noventa en Argentina, proceso que devino de las movilizaciones en oposición a la legislación contravencional y las prácticas represivas del travestismo y la transexualidad. Diferenciándonos de quienes abordan el surgimiento del activismo travesti/trans local como una reacción espontánea a la aberrante situación de vulnerabilidad en la que se encontraba esta comunidad, proponemos analizar la emergencia de dicho colectivo como el resultado de un proceso contingente de identificación y articulación política, para el cual fue crucial el trazado de una frontera antagónica con el aparato represivo del Estado. Sostenemos que la emergencia de esta nueva identificación encontró su cauce en la articulación del activismo gay, lésbico, travesti, transexual y bisexual que se formó en los años noventa al calor de la organización de las “Marchas del Orgullo” y los “Encuentros Nacionales GLTTB”. Esto fue posible gracias a la disponibilidad creciente del discurso de derechos para este activismo desde la década del ochenta, con el nuevo escenario de luchas ciudadanas que se configuró a partir del advenimiento de la democracia, protagonizado por el movimiento de derechos humanos.

In this article we undertake a genealogical journey to understand the identity-building of the travesti/trans collective during the 1990’s in Argentina, a process that resulted from the mobilizations in opposition to the contraventional legislation and repressive practices against travestis and transsexuals. Unlike those who approach the emergence of local travestis/trans activism as a spontaneous reaction to the aberrant situation of vulnerability in which this community found itself, we propose analyzing the emergence of this collective as the result of a contingent process of identification and political articulation, for which the drawing of an antagonistic boundary with the repressive apparatus of the State was crucial. We argue that the emergence of this new identification found its path in the articulation of gay, lesbian, travesti, transsexual and bisexual activism that was formed in the 1990s in the heat of the organization of the “Pride Marches” and the “GLTTB National Meetings”. This was possible because of the increasing availability of the discourse of rights for this activism since the 1980s, with the new scenario of citizen struggles that was configured from the advent of democracy, led by the human rights movement.
