“Después de muerto hay que disfrutar, en la tierra o en el mundo celestial”: concepciones de la muerte entre los tobas (qom) del Chaco argentino

Abstract

Este trabajo aborda las concepciones de la muerte y de la vida después de la muerte entre los tobas (qom) del Chaco argentino. Específicamente, ahonda en la noción de persona implícita en las representaciones qom de la muerte y en la continuidad de la existencia después de la muerte. La descripción de las prácticas funerarias y de duelo conducirá al análisis de las emociones implicadas en ellas. En primera instancia, se presentan las características de la vida social de los muertos y el papel del cuerpo en la existencia de la persona. Luego, las prácticas funerarias y de duelo permitirán explorar la actitud predatoria del difunto. Por último, se mencionan las consecuencias que tiene la muerte de un pariente en el sistema de parentesco.

This paper approaches the conceptions of death and life after death among the Toba (Qom) people of the Argentinean Chaco. Specifically, it studies the notion of person, which is implicit in the qom representations of death and in the continuity of the existence after death. The description of the funeral practices leads to the analysis of the emotions implied in them. First of all, this work presents the characteristics of the social life of dead people and the role of the body in the existence of the person. The funeral practices allow exploring the ‘predatory’ attitude of the deceased person. Finally, it mentions the consequences that the death of a relative has within the kinship system.
