Sobre el aburrimiento: una lectura de Las venas abiertas de América Latina

Abstract

En la edición de Las venas abiertas de América Latina de 1978, Galeano incorporó un postfacio en el que sintetizó buena parte de su proyecto como una apuesta contra el conformismo provocado por las retóricas revolucionarias, y el de la producción de saberes expertos (vgr. Ciencias sociales). Sintetizó esa crítica con una palabra: “aburrimiento”. Seguir el rastro del aburrimiento permite, por un lado, desbrozar los sentidos asociados a la producción letrada en relación con la circulación y la recepción de saberes y prácticas de la revolución. Por el otro, revisar el vínculo tenso entre la producción de conocimiento en pos de la acción política revolucionaria y la gestión de dicho conocimiento en función de otra realidad: la de la sociedad de masas en el marco de la Guerra Fría. Y, finalmente, permite comprender los intentos de un autor para explicar el estupor ante una experiencia, la de las derrotas de los proyectos revolucionarios y el triunfo de las dictaduras en Argentina, Chile y Uruguay.

In the 1978 edition of Las venas abiertas de América Latina, Eduardo Galeano added an afterword that described much of his project as a struggle against two types of conformism: one produced by revolutionary rhetoric and another stemming from the world of expert knowledge (especially in the social sciences). He summed up his critique in a single word: “boredom”. Following the trail of boredom helps us, on the one hand, pin down the meaning of intellectual activity during this time and its relationship to the circulation and reception of knowledge as well as revolutionary practice. On the other hand, it opens a window onto the tense link between the production of knowledge in pursuit of revolutionary political action and the management of said knowledge based on another reality—that of a mass society within the framework of the Cold War. And finally, it allows us to understand the author’s attempts to explain the general public’s stupor before the rise of military dictatorships in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay.
