Resumen
This chapter presents the results of the comparison between Chile and Argentina on soccer fan research. We study certain characteristics that define “hinchadas” or “barras”, like groups of fans that make physical violence as an identity sign. Unlike other soccer fans, these fans value positively the fights that they develop opposite of their opponents for various reasons (the possession of a territory and/or stolen emblems). In this chapter, we analyze the features that characterize the “hinchadas” from their internal organization (hierarchy and territory) and the meanings of violence. To understand the position and limit in participation of these groups, we describe the legal model in soccer clubs that guides the organization of these sports institutions in each country. We also present the possibilities for these fans to generate personal links with sports leaders and politicians.
