Los hombres de la defensa: las tropas regulares de Buenos Aires en la primera mitad del siglo XVIII

Abstract

En este trabajo, analizamos a las tropas regulares de la guarnición de Buenos Aires durante la primera mitad del siglo XVIII, en particular, entre la guerra de Sucesión Española y la guerra de los Siete Años. Para ello, luego de un planteo general sobre la defensa del territorio, en primer lugar, presentamos las reformas tempranas del presidio porteño, que se produjeron en las primeras décadas del siglo. A continuación, realizamos un análisis cuantitativo de la evolución de la tropa, desde los años previos a la reforma hasta el final del periodo. Finalmente, analizamos la distribución de la tropa en los distintos puestos y guardias del territorio rioplatense, y sus implicancias en la defensa de la gobernación.

In this paper we analyze the regular troops of the Buenos Aires garrison during the first half of the eighteenth century, particularly, between the War of the Spanish Succession and the Seven Years’ War. For this purpose, after a general approach to the defense of the territory, we first present the early reforms of the Buenos Aires presidio, which took place in the first decades of the century. Next, we carry out a quantitative analysis of the evolution of the troops, from the years prior to the reform until the end of the period. Finally, we analyze the distribution of the troops in the different posts and guards of the River Plate territory, and its implications in the defense of the governorate.
