Hacer “el tramo”: urbanización y trabajo cooperativo en un barrio de la cuenca Matanza-Riachuelo

Abstract

A partir de la investigación etnográfica en una cooperativa de mantenimiento y limpieza de arroyos de un barrio popular del Gran Buenos Aires se busca abordar la conjunción entre trabajo y urbanización. Por un lado, la investigación se concentra en los sentidos construidos sobre el trabajo y el valor que condensa dicha actividad, la cual implica organizarse laboralmente con otros, mixturar el trabajo intensivo y esforzado con momentos de placer y descanso, demostrar y transmitir conocimientos técnicos específicos y tratar los conflictos de manera resolutiva. Por otro lado, este trabajo se articula con otras formas de aprovisionamiento y de obtención de ingresos, las cuales son sostenidas en un amplio abanico de opciones. Finalmente, se exploran los modos en que se configura cotidianamente la tarea en la cooperativa: el trabajo de mantener “limpio el barrio” está estrechamente enlazado con el “trabajo político”, ya que las cooperativas se enmarcan en organizaciones barriales caracterizadas por la movilización de vínculos y actividades ligadas a la vida política local. Pero también se conecta con el “trabajo de urbanizar”, esto es, como una dimensión más del proceso continuo de producción del hábitat. Esta exploración permitirá una aproximación a las maneras en que los sectores populares construyen tramas de bienestar y proyectos colectivos con los cuales lidian ante una vida urbana compleja, incierta y estructurada por una creciente precarización.

Based on an ethnographic research in a maintenance and cleaning cooperative focused on streams in a working-class neighborhood of Greater Buenos Aires, we aim to address the intersection between work and urbanization. On one hand, we delve into the meanings constructed around work and the value encapsulated by this activity. This entails labor organization with others, blending intensive and effort work with moments of rest, demonstrating and transmitting specific technical knowledge, and the achievement of conflict resolution. Furthermore, we are interested in examining how this work interconnects with other means of provision and subsistence strategies, all of which are sustained through a wide array of options. Finally, this paper explores the ways in which the daily labor in a cooperative is configured: maintaining the “neighborhood” is melded with “political labor”, as this kind of work is characterized by the connections and activities intertwined with local political life. At the same time, cooperative labor is related with “urbanization work”, serving yet another dimension of the ongoing urbanization process. This exploration will enable us to approach the manners in which urban working-class sectors construct networks of well-being and collective projects to grapple with a complex, uncertain urban life structured by increasing precariousness.
